RC, isnt that heavy black ground a challenge?
parts of the Winter Garden SW of here grow great onions, but it's way lighter ground...

I add compost to my garden constantly
All grass clippings, leaves. and veggie kitchen scraps go to the compost pile
This black land has a lot of sand in it so it is fairly loose to begin with

First time with onions this year - so pardon for any silly questions.

I planted "multiplying onions" from the feed store back in September - turns out they are pretty much big green onions - eat the onion or the chives - but I let them get a bit big.

I grabbed some small white and purple onions this morning - these are supposed to get about the size of a baseball?

And I don't understand planting the ones that are already baseball size and ready to eat? They are getting those in later this week. I guess they just get bigger and bigger?

Multiplying onions are planted from bulbs that are divided off the mother plant
About the size of a dime
Their young tender green growth is what I use to cook with,...cornbread dressing, boudan sausage, etc

All the other onions sets I buy come in bundles of 100 or so
All about the size of spaghetti in thickness

I hope to get some purple onion sets, but I will plant what I find
        I love onions

BTW, I planted more garlic this morning,...can never have enough garlic

Hmmm.....I just bought the dried out onion "pearls" the size of a nickel.

By the lb.....about $10 to plant what I intended. Hope that was right? Never seen our place sell the noodles.

Thanks!! Now I gotta go get some garlic. Didnt think of that!

Here's a pic of the two bundles I planted last year

They are a bit bigger than spaghetti noodles

They just seem that small when one has to bend over to plant each one

My back already hurting just thinking about it

I think all the stores just get them from dixondale anyways. I will plant one bunch of Cajun reds and they should last all year even giving away a lot.

Not onion related but my huge better boy tomato plant survived and is loaded with golf ball sized fruits.

My haul on “multiplying” onions as they called them.

Got the sets in today! Looking forward to a winter garden for once!

The ugly tomatoes are another story 😂

The tomatoes may not be pretty, but they probably tastes 100x better than any in the stores

Where is that store with the onion sets? Nice, and the price is $ 1.50 less than what I paid today

Anyway, I got mine planted this evening so the hard part is done

Stuck my 1015's and Texas Legends in the ground this past Friday before the rain. You can't beat those homegrown onions for cooking along with some homemade onion rings.

The rains were a God send
Not much can go wrong now
Animals won't bother them, and last year they were covered in snow
and still produced a bumper crop

When my son was down, we had more onion rings with fried crappie than should be allowed by law
