    Rat

Finally caught the rat that ate my truck wires and left me afoot. It finally went inside the live trap I guess the mice had been tripping it and escaping before the big un had a chance to get caught. I moved it closer to the side of the building and got it. I backed out right after we got it back from the shop and saw it waddle out from under the truck never could find it. Dang thing was as big as a hamster. Click image for larger version

My bucket wasn't deep enough to submerge the trap so I had to resort to other means to end this reign of terror that has been bestowed upon my Ford. It was a female so I might have gotten several more out of future wire chewings. I will keep the trap baited the last time I had this problem there were two of them one got into the bait chunks and died in the Polaris front compartment the other one got stomped to death after I sprayed it with hornet spray. The hornet spray if directed to their head will get them choked down and they aren't as frisky. I keep #12 22 rat shot in my Marlin lever rifle it does the job at close range if you can get a shot. It's the old style crimped rat shot not the CCI plastic cap stuff. It had a death grip on the cage I pulled the hide off of its tail trying to get it out of there after the #12 procedure.

I got to shoot rats with gramps old pump Winchester 22. Go into the hay barn and shine a flashlight and they would be running on the ceiling joists like shooting quail. When we tore the old barns down up here in 2010 the guy helping me caught a huge rat that was solid gray no brown markings. He chased it around and finally whacked it with a V belt that was hanging in the barn. Didn't find a single snake but chingos of spiders I couldn't sleep a couple of nights we were here working. Dreamt of spiders. My dad always talked about Pear Rats we had some living in a big Agave cluster we made the mistake of planting here. I had enough of it finally and got the loader and dug all of it up and burned it. Nothing but a rat haven.

BIL is a mechanic and it is very common problem with rodents & also then snakes moving into a vehicle. Rats helped the Russian defeat the Germans by eating the wires/insulation in their vehicles while seeking warmth.

They destroyed my neighbors new Kubota tractor. He traded it in and his new John Deere immediately got screwed up. They are using rodent deterrent bags the foreman swears they work he leaves his skid steer in the hay barns never has any problems. I was told the wiring Deere used had either peanut or soybean oil in the insulation was why they ate it so bad. My friend down the road from me has a Challenger track style tractor in his shop now with a chewed up wiring harness. It's a mess nothing works.

The Henry Garden Gun is one that belongs right by your side as soon as you walk out the front door to start the day’s chores. Tuck it next to the seat of your tractor or riding mower and have it at the ready for when something slithers into view through the grass, dispatch those barn-dwelling birds without dispatching the barn around them, or exterminate the mice that are turning your garden into a buffet. This smoothbore lever action is a workhorse that belongs in a toolbox just as much as a gun safe.Using shotshell with a rifled barrel spreads the shot pattern too wide to be effective and damages the rifling over time, which is why our Garden Gun features an 18.5” round blued steel barrel that is void of any rifling, providing the perfect platform for slinging .22 LR shotshell projectiles in a tight pattern. And with a 15-round capacity there is plenty to go around. The black ash furniture provides a rugged look and sets this shotgun apart from the otherwise very similar Classic Lever Action .22. A blued steel hammer, lever and trigger are at the heart of the exceptionally smooth action, which you must feel to believe. The adjustable rear sight and blade front sight provide all the accuracy you could need for the short-range shots that the Garden Gun is intended for. At a mere 5.25 lbs. and a compact overall length of 36.5” this is a trim package for grab-and-go convenience. When your pests are all gone you just might find yourself asking the neighbors if you can help with theirs.IMPORTANT: Before taking any action to control or dispatch pests, it is crucial to consult any wildlife protection laws that affect your area. Compliance with these laws is essential to avoid legal penalties, fines, and ensure the conservation of biodiversity. If you are unsure about the legal status of a species, consult your local wildlife authorities.

I have seen the garden guns. I have one I call my garden gun it's a Winchester Wildcat made in Russia. It has a 16" barrel and I shoot CCI Quiets suppressed in it. Kind of like a pellet rifle it's deadly and super quiet. I sniped plenty of Starlings with that thing I have fragmenting hollow points for it. I popped a ground squirrel with one here in the yard it looked like one of those prairie dogs that had been shot with a 22-250.
