    Used Tractor

I want to buy a used tractor with brush hog eventually, but wasn't planning on it yet. I saw this tractor for sale out in front of a man's place a few days back. Anyone familiar with this model of tractor? It is 2WD not 4WD, but probably all I would need. It has 314 hours. I buy used trucks and do well. But this is different for me. I invite any suggestions or comments.

That wouldn’t be my first choice. You want a hydro trans and 4wd and a front loader at minimum. You’ll regret not getting those later. Many of the newer tractors have skid steer style detachable buckets so you can change to forks or something else quickly and easily.

What On The Hook said. Once you get serious give my neighbor at American Ag a call. He sales strictly used equipment/tractors. If he doesn't have exactly what you want, he'll find it for you. Knows pretty much anything there is to know about tractors and what is best based on what you plan to use it for.

American Ag LLC provides quality used tractors and farm equipment to farmers and ranchers throughout the Southwest United States. American Ag LLC is family-owned and operated. We inspect all tractors and equipment to ensure proper working condition prior to delivery to our customers.

My first was a Massey 240. Great little tractor except.............no bucket. The dealer (friend) said this is a really nice tractor and tried to talk me out of it because the lack of a front end loader. And you can't imagine all the uses that a front end loader is good for.

Im not saying not to buy but it is not a smoking good deal. I would hold out for 1 with a FEL, that me. This is definitely the place to ask these questions.

That tractor will sit there for sale forever. You dont want the same penance. Unless you are farming long simple lines hydro transmission is the only way to go.

How large of a brush hog do you want/need? Then size the tractor accordingly to run it. Get that size tractor in 4x4 with a loader in the brand that has close by dealer for service and parts. Make sure your truck and trailer are up to the task for hauling in.

You can add a FEL to that model. Or, at least you could at one time. That model was made up until 2018, so perhaps there are some compatible FELs around. But, adding them after the fact is rarely cost effective. It may not have the valves and plumbing in place, and that adds significant cost.

That's a light weight/light duty mower. 2 trains of thought. Buy cheap mowers, thrash them, discard and replace. Or, buy a heavy duty mower and fight the rust.

Transmissions. Hydrostatic is only available in relatively small tractors or some huge, industrial sort of machines. Geared transmission with a power shifter (goes by a variety of names) is perfectly fine for loader work. Power shifter basically means a lever which permits you (without touching the clutch) to shift from forward to neutral to reverse.

4x4 is likely a requirement if you have wet ground or want to do serious digging/ground engagement. 2x4 is likely fine for mowing dry ground.

One more point - at your age, consider a cab. Summer is brutal on an open tractor. Winter can be tough too. And, you won't be sucking down tons of dust and debris while mowing. Wind chill was high 20's yesterday with a light rain/drizzle, and I was working on my tractor in a t-shirt and jeans.

Agree with the above but if you're just doing some light duty mowing on some acreage, throw out a obo offer of $6,500. You might have found a nice deal.

Agreed, people seem to have a lot of money when it comes to buying stuff.. Great to have the hydro, quick change, loader etc., but is he really gonna need all that for what he wants it for?
Wouldn't be my first choice, but anything with computers and hydros are something I couldn't work on.

That old adage that states "If you want something done right you must do it yourself!", didn't quite hold true regarding my latest surgery.

We aren’t getting any younger and things aren’t getting easier as we age so why make it harder than it has to be? The harder it is to use, the less it will be used and less will be accomplished using the tool. An old popping Johnny will mow grass, but it isn’t very functional. Manual steering, heavy clutch and brakes. It’s a workout to run one. Why do that?

Tractordata.com has the specs on a bunch of tractors. It's a great reference. Stuff like weight, length, ect that is invaluable for sizing storage, trailers, and tow vehicles. And capacities. How much it can lift, or pto hp.

I have looked into that in the past, just trying to get some idea of what I may do. But you are correct about sizing for storage and trailer.

First off, seller is way too high on that one, that's about a 7k tractor. I'd find something like this...

Have you dealt with/bought from this Elite Equipment? They have a listing for a 2023 Cat 299D Compact Track Loader for $14,500 which would be worth $60K plus. I hit Buy It Now immediately, we'll see what happens. This Kubota tractor seems awfully cheap too.
