I heard the Pres. of the union speak today and he literally said that they will strangle this nation until they get what they want. He was very explicit on how they were going to hurt .50us until the companies give in, it sounded exactly like a Communist threat, just like the Pres. of the auto workers union. I have never had much use for unions, but will concede that they served their purpose at one time, if not for unions we would still be working for 50 cents an hour, 6 days a week.

No we wouldn’t. The capitalist market would have taken over and those who offered a better wage and work schedule would have taken all the good employees and the other employers would have to do as good or better to make sure they got the best employees. Once the government started passing legislation regarding wages and working conditions, the usefulness of a union went right out the window. They have been needed since and they do nothing but harm businesses and in this case the everyday American, you know the exact people that are paying members of the union.

Unions may have had their place, but they did not invent weekends or improved worker satisfaction/work-life balance, Henry Ford did.

ILA starting hourly wage is $20 and goes up from there based on seniority. Other reports say base salary is $81,000. Reportedly 1/3 of ILA members make over $200.000 per year with overtime.

That explains why they are so hell bent on getting a new contract signed. There's no way they'll be able to make the same kind of money doing a similar job anywhere else. They need to maintain their current lifestyle and the only way to do that is to stay where they are, which will require a new contract.

While it may put increased pressure on the country as a whole, I say the USMX needs to forgo a new contract, start hiring/training new workers (plenty of them out there) and let these union members stay on the picket line until their houses are foreclosed on and their cars are repossessed and/or their union goes bankrupt.

I agree. However, this strike only effects the East and Gulf coast. The west coast Longshoreman got a deal last year. ILA just wants a deal comparable to them

That union boss is straight out of the mafia chronicles. Makes almost a million a year, had a 72 foot yacht, lives in a 1.7 million dollar estate, and talks like a friggin gangster. They say he's got mafia ties and one witness has already ended up dead in the trunk of a car. Not a very good spokesperson for the plight of his union workers.

I'm not really up to speed on labor/union laws. But, I seem to recall that in some/many situations, the employer is prohibited from hiring permanent replacement workers. Temp workers can be hired during a strike, but not permanent replacements for the employees out on strike.

I don't know either but if the employers hire temporary replacements the question would be how long is temporary?

          As for the automation piece….

Dealing with this crap is precisely why companies prefer automation.

He is making the opponents argument.

Who do you want to deal with….this guy….or some developers and a robot.

Ill take the latter…and he and his men should slowly learn to change with time and technology.

RIP to the carburetor experts out there…and all the farriers.

Supposedly, he flatly turned down a 50% pay increase for his members. They should be begging to take that offer and keep their jobs. Automation ain't going away!

He flatly turned down 50% and they agreed to leave the same language regarding automation that was in the previous contract in the new contract. They got everything they wanted minus 20% of the pay they were asking for (I think they were seeking 70% pay increase) and not only did they turn it down, they wouldn't even provide a counter offer. Again, not negotiating in good faith with is required by the NLRA.

From my living room I can see ships coming in and out of the Houston ship channel. Ain’t seen a single one today. Bet it’s a mess out in the gulf from the jetties.

Gives the coast guard a chance to do inspections while they're anchored up. Expect to hear about drug bundles washing up on the west end of Galveston in the near future

As I understand the TP shortage during covid it was because when offices shut down more people took their dumps at home. Offices bought 1 ply. Homeowners buy 2 ply therefore the shortage of 2 ply. I remember churches giving their 1 ply TP away free

I mentioned this on the other thread, it's a completely different supply chain. I get 2 ply commercial at work, and never had any problem at all getting it during the previous shortages: as I understand, for whatever reason it's a completely different production and distribution line for commercial products, and the commercial was never affected by the panic and hoarding. It certainly would have shifted actual usage from the commercial market to the home market when everybody was at home.

My fallback plan if it got serious is always to just buy one from our vendor at work, then have to deal with a 96 roll case.
