    How Far can you Cast?

    Your trout rig

An old fishing bud once told me when I asked how he fishes his spoons,

"Throw as far as you can, and reel in as fast as you can"

He proved it many times with full stringers of trout.

I fish with spoons almost exclusively in the surf, but I will throw topwaters before day break or rig a finger mullet rod

so I can sit in my comfy chair and watch it later in the day.

I never measured the distance I can cast a 3/4oz, but with a north wind behind me it can be difficult to see it land.

My rig of choice has been the same for years, a Gloomis 6, 1/2ft with a Curado 200 on it

    20lb braid

Once those bearings get warmed up I have no fear of firing it out, HARD

Now if only the surf temp would just rise a bit more,

Trout fever is a horrible disease

I learned with an Ambassador 5000.....and zing that thing. .. so these new reels it's like cheating.

If I could throw a football or a baseball like I can cast i would be a bazillionaire... i can a doorbell with a spinner bait....

Try jigging a spoon. Work it just like a jig tail.... switch it up. And try a black spoon.....youre welcome.

LOL…I remember way back when braid first started getting popular. I still had a few TA H5 and H7’s and most of them I lost when I would rocket them out and I would have buried braid in my reel.
Them spoons are still headed to the Caymans.

An Ambassador 5000 on a LCI Striker was my first real trout set up rig

Bought it at a fishing show in the Astrodome many many moons ago
Was the top of the line rig at that time. Still got it, and use it

I have many spoons, some bought, others I have made
All have small Spro swivels mounted on the front

I switch up on my spoon fishing technique sometimes, but the strike on a fast spoon is what I live for.
Nothing is as good as a hard hit and drag peeling fast.

I'm sick, need salt water BAD!

I can cast as far as it takes to get hung up on something, I know that much.
I don't have anything clever to write here.

My Dad and other old salts got with Grant Illsing and removed the brass bushings from their old Ambassadeur reels and replaced them with bearings. Game was on then.

Yeah, not sure. Seaguars braid can chuck it farther than anything else that I have used. Super thin, ultra supple. Strong. Just take a second to secure the braid/ reel connection after the mammoth distance cast. . Best that I have ever used. By far. And for surf casting I use mono. Distance is not a priority. More like where are the fish, sometimes 15 feet out.

Started using the 5000B when the trees in the Black Forrest on Rayburn still had leaves on them, I had both my boys using the Ambassador 5000B & C at the age of 10 (late 80s) ......last year my son felt sorry for me and bought me a Lews after out casting me with me using a 200E7, that morning he covered almost twice the water with his Lews. I now have 2 Lews I use.
Well cut my legs off and call me shorty

Sometimes far enough. Other times, not as far.
