Ownwell out of Austin. They charge 25% of what they save you. Used them last year for the first time. Very pleased. We’ll see how they do this year. We’d love to help you out. Which way did you come in?Comment

If that company doesn't go there try O'Connor in Houston. Thing is they got so big, they now charge 50%.
I'm thinking of changing to Ownwell and ditching O'Connor, been using them since they started and charged 25% and if they didn't win, they'd give you a $25 gift certificate for a restaurant. Times have changed.Last edited by Cubera; 04-28-2024, 07:39 AM.That old adage that states "If you want something done right you must do it yourself!", didn't quite hold true regarding my latest surgery.

For me O’Connor sucks. I told them I would meet him at the meeting and bring pictures that would help us seal the deal. Showed up 15 minutes early and he said he had already settled at their appraisal.
Did it myself the next year and got it reduced big time.
I’ve got a great story to share if I find the time. We’d love to help you out. Which way did you come in?Comment

Conner sucked in my San Jacinto county protest. I kept getting emails from several associates and a different one did the protest and failed to change anything. Like Newtron I just spoke to appraisal office the next year w/o photos and got it down somewhat but there was a sale of similar property they were basing the amount on I couldn't contest. Will just do it myself again.Comment

I gave them a year old appraisal and it either wasn’t used or useless.
Playing victim is the most powerful position on the board. You get to define the villain and the hero, and nothing is your fault. Plus if you don’t like the way it’s going you can redefine the hero as a villain.Comment

I''ll be dumping OConnor as soon as they finish my protest in Bandera County. Still haven't settled my account for 2023 yet.
Can't dump them for that account since they are the only ones who protest there.
Gonna give the new kids on the block a shot for my Harris County since they are hungry and only charge 25%. I'm sure that will change as soon as they build a client base.Last edited by Cubera; 04-29-2024, 07:52 AM.That old adage that states "If you want something done right you must do it yourself!", didn't quite hold true regarding my latest surgery.

The companies are making money doing what you can pretty easily do yourself. They work on volume, so if they only do a i-file and can get you a tax reduction that would earn them $300 for the 15 minutes of work they do, they will do that all day long.
I've never hired anyone to do mine. In Harris County, it is really fairly easy to do at the first two levels. First level is sort of like your Standard Deduction on your income Tax - i-file. You fill out some lines in a questionnaire and their computer either accepts or counters your offer. If that doesn't sit right with you, you can go to the next level, a one-on-one meeting do discuss particulars - not sure they do these in person any more, but I have done the in person protest 3 times and done much better than the i-File. If that doesn't satisfy you, you can go before the board.
I have been strongly advised to not go before the board without a really good specialist representing you. They have been known to spank more than a few people who end up paying even more - you're better off arguing with the low level peons than the board.
Full disclosure, I have a good friend who is a Chief Appraiser. I have been well advised.👍 1Comment
