You can only make a WAG that R&D will EVER pay off, That is why R&D is it's own accounting column, not an individual cost in a single project.

The entire Ford EV division is hardly a “single project”.. It’s basically the majority of what they’re aiming the company toward. It DOES get accounted for. It’s probably the significant majority of all R&D that the company is currently involved in. That’s what the original story was about, that loss figure included Ford “Model E” division R&D among its other P/L figures.
